Making sure that you dress to impress and project your most professional image is critical – it can have as much impact on our prospective employers as what you say in your interview. Dress with Confidence
One of the most important things to remember when dressing for an interview is that you feel confident in what you’re wearing. A tailored, smart suit will work wonders for your confidence as well as looking stylish and in control. You should look for an interview outfit which really makes a great first impression. What we wear can make a big difference to our confidence levels and make you feel your absolute best.
Be Smart with Colour Choices
Darker tones are normally perceived to be the most appropriate for job interviews, but that doesn’t have to mean black. A charcoal suit always looks better than a stark black one and remember the charcoal grey will suit many shirt colours too. Add a pop of colour to exude confidence like a red shirt for the ladies and a colour tie for the men. Ladies, beware of plunging necklines as they are not appropriate for a job interview.
Ladies, be clever with your accessories as overdoing it will cause a distraction to your interviewers and can also look tacky.
For men, the rule to make a suit work and work well is to ensure that you are wearing a belt that is narrow and ensure the colour of your belt matches that of your shoes. Men can also jazz up the style of a suit by inserting a pocket square which doesn’t have to match the pattern of the tie but blends colour wise. In terms of bags for work, ladies avoid anything oversized or cluttered. A medium sized shoulder bag in black shows minimal fuss and looks more professional. For men a brief case or man bag is appropriate.
Always Wear a Jacket
A smart jacket is a job interview essential, especially in a more formal environment. A quality suit jacket that fits you well will transform your look and show that you mean business. You’ll be able to wear it time and time again after your interview. Suits are a great choice as they add a sense of formality to the occasion and reiterate your serious intentions for the role. Remember you will always look so much more professional if you add a jacket.
Consider the culture of the organisation
When looking for clothes for an interview you should consider the culture of the organisation. If you are not sure what style of interview attire might be acceptable, a great tip is to have a look at the company’s website. Look at the business wear of the employees photographed. Are they wearing conservative business clothes or something more informal? This will give you a good indication of what the culture and overall style of the organisation is and therefore what will be acceptable dress for the interview.
